The first week of the orthodontic journey can be tough, especially because the braces are new and you likely experience some discomfort. The soreness is normal and to be expected. In fact, your teeth will most likely feel this way after every adjustment appointment. This is because the pressure applied by the braces are shifting and moving the teeth. To help you find comfort in times like these, our orthodontist, Dr. Catherine Scheurer McDevitt, has some tips for you.

-Use an oral anesthetic, like Orajel®, to numb the teeth and gums. This can help you instantly relieve the pain.

-Use an ice pack to chill the jaws, teeth, and gums. The ice pack can provide the relief you need.

-Take over-the-counter pain medications if necessary. You can take Advil, ibuprofen, or even Tylenol.

-Only eat soft foods. This is important because if you chew tough foods, then the pain will only get worse.

-Use your teeth often. I know it hurts, but the sore teeth are like sore muscles. The more you use them, the quicker they will feel better.

-When you eat and drink, choose cold products that can help you ice the mouth directly where it is sore.

-Be patient. Although the soreness is uncomfortable, it won’t last. In fact, it should subside within a few days. So, try to control the soreness until then.
